The Shelby County Health Department is recommending that citizens in the Memphis metropolitan area taken precautions against high levels of particle pollution currently in the Mid-South. Particle pollution from Saharan dust storms has been transported into the region and is expected to remain in the area until later this week. Area PM Fine (PM 2.5) monitors are recording concentrations in the high end of the moderate (Yellow) range approaching the Code Orange threshold. People within the sensitive groups such as those with lung conditions (asthma, emphysema, COPD, etc.), cardiac conditions, the elderly, young children, and those doing strenuous outdoor activities over extended periods of time should be especially aware of negative health effects. These effects include difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, dizziness, or a general uneasy ill feeling. If the effects do not subside in a short amount of time, seek medical attention. Expect similar conditions to continue through at least tomorrow and possibly later this week.
