Shelby County Sheriff's Office The Law Enforcement Commendation Medal

The Isaac Shelby Chapter of the Sons of American Revolution (SAR) awarded its Public Service Awards to 10 recipients from various agencies in Shelby County today at the University Club of Memphis. SCSO Traffic Deputy Samuel Lilley received the Law Enforcement Award.

The Law Enforcement Commendation Medal is presented to those who have served with distinction and devotion in the field of law enforcement. The medal is intended to recognize exceptional service or accomplishment in the field of law enforcement.

Deputy Lilley was the primary deputy who made the decision to act decisively during a welfare check on a male standing outside the bridge railing on the Canada Rd overpass, over Interstate 40. He held the individual there until another deputy and others were able to get him over the rail. Deputy Lilley is commended for his bravery and selflessly putting himself in harm’s way in order to prevent the individual from harming himself. Deputy Lilley’s, patience and quick response ultimately preserved life and displayed the upmost integrity of the Sheriff’s Office.

Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr., Assistant Chief Newt Schaeffer, Chief Inspector Derek Mills, Sgt. Kevin Sathongnhoth, and members of the SCSO Pipes & Drums attended the ceremony. Arlington Fire Department, Bartlett Police Department, Collierville Police Department, Collierville Fire Department, Memphis Police Department, and Memphis Fire Department all had honorees recognized. Thank you to SAR president Rick Treharne and vice-president Tom Powell for the recognition for Deputy Lilley. Powell is also a member of the Emergency Services unit, part of the SCSO Volunteer Services bureau.
