Shelby County Sheriff's Department Deputy Toccara Carpenter

036e

Sergeant Kasandra Smith with the Memphis Police Department, assigned to Homicide Bureau, recently sent the following note and photo to our Patrol Support Services Bureau praising one of our school resource officers, Deputy Toccara Carpenter:

"Last October 2021, my granddaughter, Khloe Smith, woke up one morning unable to walk. She was admitted to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where they found two tumors on her adrenal glands. Khloe was transferred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where they ran series of test and imaging scans. After the test reviews, Khloe was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer, which spread throughout her body. Khloe started chemotherapy, as the medical staff at St. Jude Hospital prepared to remove the tumors. Both tumors were removed. Khloe later started her first stem cell and chemotherapy.

"On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, I was getting ready to take Khloe to Little Caesars Pizza when she noticed Shelby County Sheriff’s Office’s Deputy Toccara Carpenter on a traffic stop. Khloe wanted to make sure Deputy Carpenter was okay, regardless of her condition. We waited until Deputy Carpenter finished her traffic stop, we pulled over so Khloe could meet her and make sure she was okay. Deputy Carpenter was so excited to meet Khloe and we exchanged contact numbers. Deputy Carpenter asked Khloe when was her birthday and Khloe replied June 9. Khloe was admitted back into the hospital, while she finished her second stage of stem cell and chemotherapy.

"On June 9, 2022, Deputy Carpenter called Khloe to wish her a happy birthday. Later that day, Khloe was released from St. Jude Hospital on her birthday. Deputy Carpenter purchased a LOL doll for Khloe’s birthday. The Smith family appreciates Deputy Carpenter’s warm, caring, generous, and kind heart. Deputy Carpenter did not know I was a law enforcement officer until I told her. Deputy Carpenter remained professional and very polite during the entire encounter.

"Thank you, Deputy Toccara Carpenter, my law enforcement sister."
