On September 19, shortly after 6 pm, deputies responded to SCSO dispatchers alerting them of an assault and possible shots fired at McDonald's restaurant at the 3800 block of Hacks Cross Road in southeast Shelby County. McDonald's surveillance video showed suspect Tevin Garrett, 30, without provocation, strike a victim in the head with the blunt edge of an object.
Upon arrival, deputies observed a disturbance at the Zaxby's restaurant, located adjacent to the McDonald’s. Garrett, armed with a machete and a knife, had cornered two employees inside of Zaxby's. One of those individuals was holding suspect Garrett at gunpoint in self-defense. Garrett then approached multiple deputies outside in the parking lot while still wielding the machete and knife. Deputies deployed both a chemical agent and a BolaWrap, a remote non-lethal device that discharges a cord to restrain noncompliant individuals at close range, with no effect. A Memphis Police Officer, who is a Crisis Intervention Officer, assisted the deputies and deployed a taser on the suspect. As deputies attempted to take Garrett into custody, he attempted to cut them with the machete. The taser was deployed again and Garrett was subdued and taken into custody. He was transported to the Shelby County Jail, and subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault, Vandalism, and Violation of the Sex Offender Registry Act.
The Sheriff’s Office commends the quick, calm, and restrained action of the many deputies involved on the scene, as well as the dispatchers and other patrol officers. SCSO also thanks MPD’s CIT officer who responded to the scene and helped subdue to the suspect. No one was injured and a tense standoff ended peacefully. This incident remains under investigation by SCSO detectives.
