The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office participated in the 100th session of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training this week at the Memphis Police Department Training Academy. The CIT program, which began in 1988, is a community partnership of law enforcement, mental health and addiction professionals, people who live with mental illness and/or addiction disorders, their families, and other advocates.
Because this was the 100th CIT graduating class, a special ceremony hosted by Memphis Chief of Police Cerelyn Davis and emcee Joe Birch of WMC-TV5 was held October 27 at the MPD academy’s new multipurpose room. Six key people were recognized for their dedication and involvement through the years with the crisis intervention program. These included former MPD Police Director Walter Crews, Dr. Richard James, Major/Deputy Sam Cochran (represented by his son, Lee Neal Cochran), Dr. Thomas Kirchberg, Dr. Randolph Dupont, and Officer Keith Payne.
Six SCSO deputies graduated, along with 37 others representing 11 other local agencies. Assistant Chief Deputy Newt Schaefer and 15 other SCSO personnel in attendance congratulate Deputy Keiona Aguilera, Deputy Joshua Green, Deputy Jonece Jeans, Deputy Jiu Jonathan Lock, Deputy Gregory Stratman, and Deputy Alexis Tate.
